Participation requirements
The call is open for students completing their bachelor’s, master’s, and post-graduate studies, as well as young professionals from all disciplines related to urban planning and design, architecture, and urban studies. We look forward to receiving applications from urban planners, architects, sociologists, geographers, and others dealing with the built environment worldwide.
Participation fee
In 2023, the participation fee is 620 euros.
Cancellation policy
Information about the acceptance will be sent via email on May 8, 2023. We ask you to confirm your participation by May 15, 2023, by completing the registration form (a link will be sent in the letter of acceptance) and paying the participation fee.
The registration is binding, and the fee will not be refunded after the registration. In the unlikely event that the summer school is canceled, the participation fee will be refunded in full.
Visa
A visa is not required if your country is a Schengen member. Please consult the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland if you need a visa to visit Finland and if you need an invitation letter from us.
Study Credits
The course entitles participants to five (5) ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits. For completing the course, the participant is expected to complete the individual pre-assignment, the summer school workshop, and the project done during it, as well as some reading and studying to be done before the course. Students may negotiate the credits with their university.
References & Work Samples
To apply, please submit a motivation letter (max 1 page in PDF format) and a short CV (max 1 page in PDF format) to the electronic application form by April 30, 2023. Applications submitted after this deadline are not accepted. References and work samples, such as a portfolio, are not required.
Accommodation
Participants are expected to find their own accommodations for the first two nights of the summer school in Helsinki (August 14–16). Living costs in Finland are generally comparable to those in Western Europe.
The accommodation during the workshop (16–26 August) in the case study city of Pori is included in the course fee. It is organized by the hosting city. Please note, that the accommodation is in shared rooms. The accommodation in the case study city is reserved until the morning of August 26.
Transportation
Participants pay for their travel costs to Finland (Helsinki) and cover their local travel and living expenses during their stay in Finland.
Travel costs to the case study city and the excursion travel costs are included in the course fee. Possible transport during guided tours is included in the course fee.
Meals
The participants pay for their own meals during the summer school. The price of a meal varies a lot. You can spend anything from around 8 euros upwards, depending on your budget. Shopping for daily groceries follows a general Western European average.
Computers
It is highly advisable to bring your own laptop with you, as the summer school is not able to provide computers for your use.
Financial Support
We are unfortunately not in the position to grant any scholarships or other subsidies. You might have a chance of obtaining some allowances or scholarships from your own university, a non-profit foundation in your home country, or any international cooperation program supporting student exchange. The possible allowances will not affect the selection of participants in any way.
Practical Work Training / Internship
We do not have any possibilities to arrange any sort of additional employment in connection with the summer school.
